What good is it? It doesn’t do anything. Definitely doesn’t spawn any traces.

Hi @HydrangeaRose … have you just started using trace charms? For some reason, when I first started using them, it seemed like they didn’t do much. I would ask my sister (my main game buddy) all the time… “Do these work for you? They don’t seem to do anything!” She said she didn’t remember having that experience. Very soon after I started using them more regularly, they started working better for me, and my favorite thing is that when you return the traces that came up because of the Trace Charm, it counts as TWO traces you’ve returned. So that’s a definite plus!

    What are other peoples’ experiences?

for me is the cloning function (if its still active). its very helpfull for prestiging a page and very amazingly a big help in scarce spawn (remote region)

The trace charm is pretty powerful if used correctly. What it does is that it spawns other traces (which by itself does not sound overly impressive, but bear with me). Now, a common glitch is that initially nothing pops up after you case the spell (maybe that is your issue?). In these cases, restarting the app fixes this.

Why is it powerful: Well, by itself it is glorified TTD but when you improve it with three nodes, it is pretty good:

    • Knowledge is power: At least one of the extra foundables from the trace charm has the same or higher emergency level.
    • Lost and found: You get two fragments for each foundable from a trace charm that you return.
    • Studios Success: You have a chance of getting a trace charm recharge when opening a trunk.

One quirk that is probably unintentional is that you can get duplicates of the trace you casted the spell on. This seems to depend on why the trace spawned: If it spawned form a TTD you get no duplicate; when it is from a DD, you get a duplicate, but that one yields only one fragment; when it is from a wild spawn, you typically get a duplicate worth 2 fragments.

So, even with an unimproved trace charm, you can use it when you have the task to return certain rare foundables: You walk around, try to find one specimen, cast the spell on that foundable and hope for the duplicate, and maybe even more from the other spawns. Note, though that most tasks do not ask you to return "fragments", but rather "foundables", so even though your fragment count in the registry will go up by 2, the task will only count it as 1. There have been tasks, though, where the tasks required fragments.

The extra fragement and the potential duplicate helps to fill out the registry: If you find a rare wild spawn and throw an improved trace charme on it, you will typically get 4 fragments from that (but again, beware that this is only for a wild spawn; from TTD you'll likely only get 2 fragements, which might still be worth it, depending on how urgently you need the foundable).

What I would consider the more relevant application, however, is for farming Ministry Manuals and/or gold presents: Apply the trace charm to an emergency foundable gives you between 4-6 fragements, so every two trace charms on average you can place an emergency foundable with a gold frame, which yields 55 MM and 6 trunks so you have a reasonable chance to get a trace charm back; rinse and repeat.

Regarding the other related S.O.S. nodes:

    • More storage is good, because it makes it easier to manage the charms and you are less likely to lose one. You can save up to 5 before relevant events.
    • Proficiency increases the XP and FXP of the returned foundable; this is okish. The XP boost is nice if you need XP, and the FXP helps you to get more trunks. That said: The increase is in percent, so it really is only really relevant for the emergency foundables that you return. The other ****, well, not that important.
    • Efficacy: This increase the number of foundables you get. This is pretty irrelevant (and some of those nodes are super expensive) because the additional foundables are just drawn from the regular spawn table, so chances to get something useful typically is minimal. Getting an extra pidgey isn't exactly worth 100 DADA books...

What I found very efficient use of time while playing very casually is:

    • During the week only do the daily quests. Do not use trace charms (well, unless you have no space for the one you get from the daily quest), don't open portkeys, ideally even don't touch your registry so you have images to place and trunks to collect.
    • On a weekend, my wife and I went to a place nearby where you have 2-3 Inn's in close proximity; drop a BBE and a TTD and 3 DDs in each Inn.
    • Ideally you have 5 trace charms available + 1 from the daily quest. Make sure you have space for presents.
    • Drop a trace charm on any emergency foundable that pops up. If you run out of trace charms, place images and collect trunks from the registry for a chance of more trace charms. Open all portkeys.
    • Profit...

The trace charm has a real learning curve...I also didn't get it's charm to begin with. 😉

I've found that the 2 big things that I was doing wrong to start was putting the charm on random yellow and orange beams, and also not closing out and restarting my game when the sparkly traces vanish from my map (usually after I finish one foundable trace).

Once I learned to use the charms on red beams (severe or emergency foundables) and have a potion or two available, I enjoyed them much more.

This is a risky tip, but sometimes if I open a trace and discover it is a foundable I need to fill my registry, I'll leave the encounter and then put the trace charm on it! (Occasionally the trace can vanish when you leave, hence=risky) But often you'll end up with 2 of the same traces (a clone) which will result in 4 fragments you need! It can really help if there is something you've had trouble finding in your area. I used them quite a bit this event because I had low boggart spawns.

My favorite way to use the trace charm is on red beam oddities, because the large amount of ministry manuals when you place those foundables in the registry! Really helps you up your skill trees!

Also, once Studio Success is unlocked in the skill tree, try to keep one empty trace charm space because each registry trunk has a chance of giving you a charm, and you can't keep it if you're full. I've lost out on quite a few charms that way. So if you're at capacity, try to use one before opening your registry trunks.

So there are certain times I find them really helpful now... but they weren't my favorite until I figured out how to use them better. :) Enjoy!
