I finally have all but one of the mystery items unlocked, so I’m ready to start discussing the story behind the Calamity. I decided we could break the story down into smaller parts to discuss it in an organized way. So soon I will post the other Chapters and we can discuss those in depth. There will most likely be some overlap, but I thought this may be a fun way to discuss the story behind this game.

** NOTE: SPOILERS WILL BE IN THIS THREAD **

Please note!! If you have not collected the fragments and don’t want it ruined, then this will be dangerous to read. So go work on your mysteries and come back once you have your own theories.

This first section definitely makes it look like Grim Fawley was the one who caused the Calamity.

We have the following items:

  • Daily Prophet: This clipping is old and is about a wizard Flannery who used an ancient spell to “track down his greatest desire”.
  • Ministry Memos outlining somewhat suspicious things Grom has been up to. Requesting access to the love room, ordering ingredients for a potion, requesting a Portkey to travel to Prague, and a request for an ancient copy of runes that was denied
  • Grim Fawley’s journal outlines some of his thoughts. He seems to know of that ancient spell that Flannery used and wonders if he cannot. Combine it with something. He feels “close” to Penelope in the love room, a note from Regina Rowle staring something about him “moving on” in the love room, Grim speaking of magic to bring Penelope back, and a coded message (will get to this shortly)
  • An incident report of an ancient spell nook going missing from Prague
  • An ancient Rune book with missing pages
  • A handwritten note about the power of the love room with a note from Grim about love being imbued into our very bones.

So I take it Grim heard about an ancient spell to track down things that one desires (Penelope), tried to get the book and they denied access to it, so he took the Portkey to Prague and stole the book and tore the pages out that contained the spell. The ingredients for the potion must be something he needed to create this spell.

One point if interest, is that Jobberknoll feathers are used in Truth serums and memory potions. So did he need to create a memory of Penelope in the love room? He seems to think he can combine a love potion (which is commonly created in the love room) with this ancient spell to create a spell that will find Penelope. His note about it being “imbued into our bones” throws me off.

To that coded message. WizardPhD deciphered the code and it reads “You know what this night means to me - Five Years”. In beta, the message read “They’re watching everything. I need to be more careful.” So what the heck happened 5 years ago? Who does he think is watching him? The Ministry of Magic? Harry and Aurors?

I feel with the info we currently have, it seems that Grim created the calamity as a result of trying to find Penelope. The Calamity causes foundables to appear, and maybe he was hoping Penelope would be one of those foundables. Does anyone have anything to add?

I’m curious of any theories. And if anyone has any idea about what happened 5 years ago, what Regina saw in the love room, what Grim planned to do with love and bones, what is significant about the potion ingredients, any other theories on his trip to Prague, or anything else of note. I love stuff like this and am ready for all the wild crazy theories or side-knowledge people have to help us unravel this more.

I'm not convinced the time sequencing is correct. Based on their character traits I am convinced that Penelope was manipulating Grim (possibly through the long time use of a love potion) into some of these actions prior to the disappearance of the 5. These coded messages are indicative of that. So the idea that Grim caused the Calamity to try to get Penelope back completely disregard that Grim was doing things for Penelope before she disappeared.

Interesting. I always looked at that Chapter 1 section as being “recent events” but you are correct that there is nothing in there that clearly states they were occurring AFTER The London 5 incident.

One thing to keep in mind is they were married in June of 2006, and I think he wasn’t an unspeakable yet. He was working in Magical Law Enforcement and she helped convince him to take the promotion. So, in your version of events it would be so that she could get access to the love room. That is an interesting theory.

The Ravenclaw in me wants to doubt that she has good intentions because of her Slythein background. However, Harry in the dialogue seemed like he felt she could be trusted...so I don’t know...

I think it’s a good way to look at it, but I’m not 100% convinced the events in Chapter 1 are from before the London 5 incident.
