Anyone ever been to one of these for Pokemon Go? What happens here and what are they all about? I'm debating going myself so I figured I would ask and see if anyone had some info. The official site is pretty vague on what actually is going on. 🐍
I've gone to a few "anomalies" for Ingress. It was great. Loads of fun and meeting other players. But that was long ago, so I don't know how well it compares to this.
I went to GoFest last month and it was an amazing time! It's the only GoFest/Niantic event I've ever gone to, so everything I say will be from the one experience. So for GoFest, this year there was a lottery set up where players needed to go through their in-game account to enter (a valid email address is needed). After a certain date, Niantic starts to draw accounts by lots and if you are selected, you will be notified by email and are given a short window (48hrs?) to log in and purchase tickets. Each account was allowed to buy 4 tickets. And only accounts that had tickets would be able to see the special Pokestops and Pokemon spawns. The drawings would continue until tickets were sold-out. General admission was $25 (plus taxes and fees), iirc, and early admission (1 or 2 hrs early) was $5 more.
For the event itself, it was held in a large park (Grant Park) and within the park, there were sections set up with different 'biomes' (think flagged areas in HPWU where certain types of foundables are more likely to be found). The actual spawns consisted mostly of Pokemon that are uncommon or rare and even included one pair of (thus far) event exclusive spawns They had also set up team lounges, a trading post where players would go if they were looking for other players who wanted to trade Pokemon, and a battle arena where players could enter into tournaments to win a special in-game badge.
Also, as per past years, attendees were given a special research assignment (similar to what we are getting for the Flora and Fauna event) which rewarded an encounter with a Mythical Pokemon which, up to that point, had never been seen in the game. It will eventually be released as a different set of special research to the world, but not for at least another month or two.
My only complaint was the lack of gyms and thus no raid (fortress) battles inside of the event area. Though, there was a stress test at the end of the last day of the last day where about a thousand or so players were asked to do a single raid in one of around a dozen gyms that suddenly appeared.

If you are able to go, I do suggest going.

Are these events more for young people? I mean, I’m 52, but immature. 😂 Also, I don’t have any friends who are playing, so I would have to go alone.
@Gillyweed67 You should fit right in im sure.
