I would request the same of the professions notification but it's less obnoxious. With the portrait, I don't know if my profile icon has the dot for the portrait or if I earned another badge or title or what have you. The profession one, I know that it's because I have scrolls (but probably not enough books) so I can ignore that one until I'm ready... but the profile dot. Ugh... that profile dot.
I think it is to encourage you to take a new pic each day, but I like my pic and don't intend to change it until they get the gallery working and I can save it. Lost my first pic (which I also liked) because I had not figured that out yet. :-(

I'm not taking a photo period, so it's extra annoying for me.
