Lost Runestones if error in starting Wizarding Challenge
The game needs to recognize the difference between a failed Wizarding Challenge (i.e. did not defeat the enemies in time or unconscious) and a network error.
In the case of a network error, the runestone should not be lost especially with the difficulty in ranking up families when you get to the Rank 11+ level. Losing a rank 2+ runestone because the server hiccupped (either cell provider/wifi or Niantic is irrelevant) is rage inducing. Pokémon Go's Raid passes stay active if there is a server error for the length of the raid, so there has to be a way to fix this in this game.

Agree. In addition, i have contacted the support some time ago because i have lost 3~5 runestone in a row due network issues, and they said that could do nothing. So disapointing.
