Merge Threads functionality is jarring

When you merge threads, please either:

(1) put in an HTML redirect from the old thread to the new one (and ideally from each thread and comment to the corresponding comment in the new thread)

(2) At least have the courtesy to notify the people whose comments were moved to a new thread.

It's really frustrating to give people pointers to threads in the official forum only to have them go bad.
