Send gifts and messages to friends.
I would like to be able to send gifts to friends. I was thinking the developers could create an option to obtain a personal owl, either by earning special coins through an event or challenge and using the special earned coins or regular coins to purchase the owl of your choice from Diagon Alley. Then your owl could send gifts you obtain to your friends.
Also would like to see an option to send a howler to friends. The sender would voice record the message that when received, the recipient would play the recorded message (and the senders voice would increase in volume) and add a feature that if left unopened for too long (maybe 24 hours) it would “explode” (receive a notification “bang”). Howlers could be sent to one friend or to a group...it could be any message you want to send; could send to your friends to meet up at a fortress. It should have the capability to select and choose who you want to receive the message.

The sender could even have an option to choose when the message would explode by....if wanting to meet up at a fortress by a certain time, then select time to open by. Receiver and sender receive a notification that howler exploded. This would let sender know that their friend didn’t open the message, so if it was to meet up, sender will know the friend or friends that won’t be meeting up.
This is a wonderful idea @RineGilbert especially the Howler bit. I'm sure some form of communication will be added eventually. Hopefully similar to Ingress where you can send PMs as well as speak in a global chat based on the distance you choose. I guess global would be more like Sonorus than an Owl though...
Most people suspect there will be a gifting function eventually. Otherwise there's not much point in having a friendslist.
I think the howler thing sounds fun, but I am going to put on my Buzzkill Cap. As a practical matter, coding in the timing would be complicated across time zones and audio files take up bandwidth. From a community management matter -- I am pretty sure there is no direct communication via the game application on purpose. As soon as you allow communication, you either need to have moderation, or trolls/bullies and spammers will rapidly turn the system toxic. Think of what chat is like on almost every MMORPG. It's the same reason why there's no messaging in Pokemon Go either. (And why the Ingress scanner channels periodically becomes unusable due to spam, not to mention some really ugly inter-faction interactions.)
@Glimmermir Must be a locale thing, I never experienced an issue in Ingress. Heck I know where some of the Enlightened live and they knew where I lived before I moved (Viva la Resistance!). We would do drive bys on their home portals and them to us as well. Nothing like popping a couple lvl1 bursts at 2am to say Good Morning lol
I saw a huge issue in Ingress, @CytopeAchen
Apart from the spam that Glimmer mentioned (of which there is now a TON), the community became rather toxic. It's the primary reason I stopped playing.
Dang @Craeft, I hate to hear that. The community I was apart of kept up with each other. If we didn't see someone for a few days we'd start **** out messages and checking on them.
@Craeft Yeah, the toxic stuff was what drove me out, too.
That and I did a survey of my local downtown and compared resonators laid by bots and alt accounts to ones laid by accounts associated with an actual person and got 10:1 (with offenders from both factions, though one Enlightened bot farmer stood out notably.) I was starting to think I was the only player left in NJ with only one account.
I would like to send invigoration potions to magi and profs, healing pots to Aurors, teammates so that we can do battles more regularly.
My name is Acumen and I approve this message. The howlers idea just sounds fun as all get up, and I'd love to be able to send spell energy and potions to friends.
