Traces correlation to books spent on traces

I’ve spent all my books on lessons so I could get as many traces as possible because the I love the feature but two weeks ago, it didn’t seem to matter. Friends I wizarded with would get the same as me even though they had done no trace lessons. With the change, I’ll drop on something and go into something, come out and everything will be gone. I’ve lost traces like this countless times. What’s going on? In the beginning when we first got traces, we would get about 3 extra traces pop up and they wouldn’t disappear.
