Which fictional Universe / Franchise has been most enlightening to you? Which fictional Hero has taught you a life-lesson that has significantly changed your understanding of life and how you go about your day?

      Oooh. Interesting question there, Lucoire.

I think, if we are looking at fiction generally, either Pratchett's Discworld series or Douglas Adams' Hitchhikers' would be most enlightening, given their sartirical commentaries on the world around me.

As for a fictional hero that has taught me a life lesson, I suppose that depends on the concept of hero. A protagonist that taught me a life lesson is the girl in Oliver Jeffers' The Heart and The Bottle. But from a bigger franchise, then I am not sure.

In my case it is the WARHAMMER universe, more specificly the 4 Chaos Gods: Khorne, Slaanesh, Nurgle and Tzeentch.

From Khorne I've learned that Wrath and Rage is in our nature but also what Honor truly means.

From Slaanesh I've learned that our Emotions and Feelings are just as important as our ultima ratio - and that "knowing all the facts and statistics and consequences and STILL chosing against them for love" is inherently human. I've also learned that ecstasy is a key element of the "reward mechanism" used by our brain and therefore should be used actively and purposefully BUT also that human connection (caress, hug, ****) are the most profound way to forge a connection.

From Nurgle I've learned that every end is also a beginning, that some things need to cease existing before true progress can happen. I've also learned that "ignorance is bliss" can be a viable strategy towards happiness - as most unhappiness comes from comparing what we have to what others have (essentially envy/jealousy destroys happiness)

From Tzeentch I've learned that CHANGE is the strongest and most fundamental force in existence, that "holding on to things" is ultimately futile and that adapting is the only viable strategy. I've also learned that the pursuit of knowledge is unending ("Whoever tells you that he has found the truth merely stopped searching for it"). And lastly (but certainly not leastly) that sufficiently advanced science is indistinguishable from magic.

Wow, I think that many of those same lessons for me didn't really come from a franchise Lucoire, but from studying anthropology and focusing on native american, aboriginal, and creation stories of varying cultures. We are a species that connects through our imaginations and through our words, be they written, spoken, or sung.
Probably the first "franchise" that really resonated with me and helped guide me at a younger age would have been JRR Tolkien's Lord of the Ring and Hobbit. Early on, learning that heroes aren't always sure of what they are doing and sometimes bumble along with blind, dumb, luck to their outcome. That those with the best of intentions can be swayed even though they may have been fanatical in their beliefs, and especially that we are at our cores focused internally no matter how much we may reach out to help others. Then again, I've also learned that the persistence of one person can change things and have a profound impact on others.

    Pineapple Pizza? Yes or No?

There is a Swedish banana curry pizza 🤔

In general pineapple is a good idea on a non vegetarian pizza as the Bromelain in the pineapple will make whatever meat is used softer. But like magpie31 I have an intolerance to it so I can't 😅

I have a couple of go-to pizzas and it depends on which place I am going. Tuna and onion is one I love, regardless of where I am eating. I like a good bolognese pizza (so bolognese sauce with cheese). Then there is an authentic Roman place (as in from Rome, not ancient) near me that sells pizza by the slice or by the metre. They do a gorgeous one with parma ham, **** and fresh mozzerella. They put loads of the ham on and it is good quality. Enough to take some for a salad, or share with my cats. They also do one which is potato, parsley, white sauce and ham.

I've had Pizzas that sounded weird at first but then were surprisingly tasty:
      * Ragout Fin Pizza
      * Christmas Pizza (with duck, red cabbage and dumplings)
      * Swedish Curry Pizza (with banana and curry)
      * Nutella Pizza (sweet with Nutella, strawberries and raspberries)

(that being said I have enough italian friends that've invited me to "proper" italian restaurants that I now think that every type of italian dish outside of Italy is heresy. Tasty heresy but still very much heresy)

I'm not a fan of mixing sweet flavors where they don't belong. Leave the pineapple in the fruit salad where it belongs.

I actually like flavors where they're unexpected. The reason for that is the way our taste-buds are constructed. We can SIMULTANEOUSLY taste all most of the flavors as the sections of our tongue for specific flavors overlap but not completely. What's so interesting about that is that changing the order of taste-consumption the way we perceive the second taste can be different - because the first taste activates the tastebud, making the receptor partly inactive for the second taste until the receptor re-activates.

Take beer for example, some taste better with creamy cheese, others taste better with bitter chocolate - simply due to "temporarily blocking your taste receptors"

I’m a fan of pineapple on pizza. I have friends who don’t like it on principle alone. I conducted an experiment with a few of them and asked during the holiday season if they like a baked ham covered with pineapple rings and cherries held in place with whole cloves. It’s common to see ham prepared this way both in any region of the US. They all answered yes. As a consequence, I think they should lose their voting rights, because their judgment can’t be trusted since Hawaiian style pizza is essentially the same thing.

Pineapple on pizza is a yes, but not with ham or Canadian bacon. The bromelain in pineapple is actually good for calming nerve pain, so we cook with pineapple as much as possible. We will usually do chicken or pork sausage, jalapeño and olives. Something about the sweet and salty...

  • What's the climate like where you are? Here in Thailand, it is tropical. So although it is only registering 29 celcius, the humidity is a killer today. Dunno what possessed me and why I am out pottering by daylight!

"Only 29 celcius" she says. I'm in the northeastern USA, so it's winter here. So far it's been a mild winter, not a lot of snow and temperatures around freezing so it's not bad to be outside.
    • Magpie31
      Magpie31
I say "only" because the average is 32 and in summer, it goes well into the 40s. My mum sent me a photo of her back garden in snow last week... I can't cope with the cold anymore but sort of wish I could see it! Glad it has been mild for you.
    • Lucoire
      Lucoire
Here currently we have 8°C during times when negative degrees are "usually" more common. Given that there usually is a temperature-difference of 30-40°C between summer and winter, the next summer will be interesting (in a frightening way)

      Magpie31
Owlx, 32°F is 0°C and - 12°F is - 24°C. I can't even imagine that latter temperature. The lowest I havr ever experienced is - 11°C / 12.2°F on the Great Wall of China! The temperature here is 28°C today, so a fairly cool day (and I may go for a bike ride later). In fahrenheit, that is 82°F.

LoL, yeah this is a weird sort of playground. It's purpose is obvious, but not very useful. There's no good reason to have an activity feed that logs when new users join or existing users earn a star. The only implementation where this would be a good fit is if all new discussions and comments were moderated and only approved if they were considered to be outstanding and worthwhile contributions. In that case, earning points and stars would really mean something. Obviously that's not the case here. I have five stars and lots of points, and they've mostly come from cracking jokes or taking jabs at haters. Entertaining perhaps, but hardly can be considered worthwhile contributions. So, as you can see, we sort of disregard the point system and use this section for random nonsense instead.
    • Acumen
      Acumen
I wish my phone would stop putting apostrophes where they don't belong. I meant "its" possessive, not "it's" contraction. That bugs me.
    • Acumen
      Acumen
Oh, and the fact that the point system doesn't make any sense doesn't keep us from congratulating regular contributors from earning more stars though. I mean, why not? It's silly that this page is here but it is, indeed, still here.

    • Lucoire
      Lucoire

      Acumen
I don’t think that’s 100% true of this forum Lucoire. You’re a good example of why I disagree. You’ve posted fewer comments and discussions than nearly any of the regular contributors who’ve been here as long as you have, yet you’re in the top all-time rankings. This is a strong indication that the audience does indeed appreciate quality content related to game mechanics without a bunch of nonsense.
    • Lucoire
      Lucoire
I wonder about that. Most of my "points" come from off-topic/banter, not from the Feature-Requests or Explanations. Appreciation is difficult to measure - using "thumbs up" as a metric would imply that my feature-related posts are underappreciated.

Well, speaking for myself only, I understand most of your ideas, but some of it is beyond me. Despite having worked in IT for 20 years, I'm not very technically minded. I've always been more interested in the creative design and marketing aspects of application development. In my current role I work mostly with clinical staff, so my ability to run a simple SQL query makes me a nerdy genius in their eyes. My lack of thoughtful input on your posts isn't due to a shortage of appreciation. Instead, it stems from a feeling that anything I have to add will probably sound dumb compared to what you've written. Tech speak just isn't my thing. The off-topic philosophical thoughts you've shared in discussion threads are another story. That's my thing. I feel like a conversation with you about the human condition and the nature of "knowing" would be casual and lighthearted, yet the listener would walk away significantly enlightened from the experience.
    • Lucoire
      Lucoire
Well, I asked for Feedback. ANY feedback, regardless of whether it is "technical" or "philosophical". As I've shared before, I believe that a thorough, all-encompassing understanding is required to find the truth. And to reach an all-encompassing understanding, all perspectives need to be heard - and all opinions (especially the opposing ones) need to be spoken. Therefore I'd encourage you to speak your mind, even if it may sound dumb to you.
Keep in mind, the quality of a teacher is how well (s)he can explain his thoughts to others - ANY OTHERS, regardless of intelligence, education, background. So even if you may not add new things to the conversation, you'd provide a reason to improve the explanation and you'd provide appreciation - something that (as I touched on earlier) is often missed or misunderstood.

Sometimes we just need to laugh, sometimes we need to think and reset our ideas and priorities. The balance between you two is actually fantastic as it provides a number of us with the ability to get a lovely balance of what we need and is why I keep coming back to the forum. Honestly Lucoire, your depth and insight in both tech and your own sense of self is wonderful and it is appreciated. Acumen usually helps remind me not to take the little things too much to heart and remember to smile. And you are only two of the magnificent beings on here!
    • Acumen
      Acumen
You nailed it, Bormacska. The great ideas on how to enhance the game are very cool. The fact that the ideas are conceived to begin with is already impressive, but being able to articulate the details on how such an idea could be implemented just blows me away. Combined with all the off-topic conversations ranging from clever observations about life in general to silly anecdotes, it really is a lovely experience. Makes the world seem a little smaller, and much kinder than the media would like us to think it is. We're all just trying to have a good time.
    • Magpie31
      Magpie31
I understand your point, Lucoire. Jokes do get more likes than factual, informative posts, but I don't think that means that they are any less valuable or appreciated. I know I very much appreciate all your insight and suggestions. But the nature of people is to leave reactions / feedback for things that they have a stronger emotional connection to, and that does - for better or worse - tend to be jokes rather than information.

I’m so sorry. It just seems really silly to share a theory I had about love in December right during Valentine’s week. 😓

  • There should be a pancake outlet store where one can take advantage of drastically reduced pricing on pancakes that are slightly misshapen but still taste fine. Better yet, pancakes should be free anywhere you go. If free breadsticks with dinner can become commonplace, why not free pancakes with breakfast? Here in the US, we’re trying to tackle big issues like healthcare reform, but I think we’re going about it all wrong. We need to start with small but still very important issues, like free pancakes, then work our way up. Thank you for reading.
